Corless MS Thesis on Microwave Backscatter Frequency Hopping Now Available

Posted on August 27, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

The MS thesis document by Robert Corless on the topic of microwave frequency-hopping for backscatter is now available for download on the Georgia Tech server:

MS Thesis: Part 15 Compliant Frequency Hopping Backscatter Communication at 5.8 GHz

In this work, the author discusses the unique challenges and opportunities of implementing a frequency-hopping scheme for backscatter communications. The author even designs and implements a frequency-hopping algorithm on the GTPG’s custom frequency hopping board, consisting of a programmable microcontrollers and voltage-controlled oscillator + phase locked loop chips.

Tunneling RFID Tags for Long-Range and Low-Power Microwave Applications

Francesco Amato; Christopher W. Peterson; Brian P. Degnan; Gregory D. Durgin, IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification, Year: 2018

Some of the best tunneling diode work from Francesco Amato’s PhD research will appear in the IEEE Journal on RFID this year.  This paper contains a comprehensive early survey of long-range communications with extraordinarily low power levels.

Kalman Filter Based Localization and Tracking Estimation for HIMR RFID Systems

Yang Qian, David A. Taylor, Gregory D. Durgin
IEEE International Conference on RFID 2018, Orlando, FL, April 2018

A portion of Yang Qian’s PhD research is now available on IEEExplore.  Her original conference paper from IEEE RFID 2018 explores using various Kalman filters as part of the GTPG’s Hybrid Inertial Microwave Reflectometry (HIMR) positioning scheme.  This technique uses RFID-like tags to localize nodes within a few mm of their actual position.

Partitioned Pseudo-retrodirective Arrays for Capacity Expansion of Backscatter Communication Channels

Michael A. Varner; Mohammad Alhassoun; Gregory D. Durgin
2018 IEEE International Conference on RFID, Orlando, FL, April 2018

In this paper, we outline the benefits of subdividing a retrodirective array into segments and using MIMO-style (multiple-input, multiple-output) signaling to reflect multiple streams of independent data back to a reader.  The rules for making this happen are different than a conventional MIMO link.
