Signal Constellations of a Retrodirective Array Phase Modulator

Gregory A. Koo, MS Thesis 5 April 2011

Greg Koo’s classic MS thesis on the use of retrodirective array phase modulator (RAPM) for microwave backscatter communications.  Co-invented with Albert Lu, this method of RF signal transmission has been dubbed “Koo-Lu” modulation by our researchers.

A Modified Simon Cipher 4-Block Key Schedule as a Hash

Brian Degnan, Ella Rose, Gregory Durgin
IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification

This work describes how the ultra-low-powered Simon cipher can be implemented with a simple hash. This is a powerful technique for implementing encryption on computational- and power-limited platforms such as RFID tags.

In the World of the Blind

Posted on November 15, 2017 Written by Gregory Durgin

Below is an old article on the prevalence of small-scale fading in radio links that I wrote as a post-doctoral researcher in Japan on the defunct WaveRacer site.  I plan on adding a few more of these as part of a retrospective.

Beyond the limits of classic backscattering communications: A quantum tunneling RFID tag

Francesco Amato; Hakki M. Torun; Gregory D. Durgin
2017 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)
Year: 2017,  Pages: 20 – 25

This paper presents our most ambitious backscatter measurement to date.  Drawing microWatts of power at an 5.8 GHz RF tag, a signal is backscattered in free space from the 10th floor of Viewpoint condominium tower to a reader atop ECE’s Van Leer building. This link uses our custom tunnel diode reflection circuitry to achieve a range of 1.2 kilometers.
