Mobile and RADAR Cohabitation

Propagation measurements and modeling techniques for 3.5 GHz radar-LTE spectrum sharing

Christopher R. Anderson; Gregory D. Durgin
2017 XXXIInd General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI GASS)

This recent conference publication describes how to measure and model the 3.5 GHz band for mobile communications.  This particular band is interesting because mobile radio will have to share the spectrum with military radar systems, with mobile operators being required to “check out” their spectrum from a master database.

New Research Program for Undergrad Cadets and Midshipmen

Posted on November 20, 2017 Written by Gregory Durgin

Prof. Vince Mooney and Prof. Durgin have been awarded a grant from ONR and AFRL to build a cadet-based undergraduate research program in cybersecurity. The program will involve a dozen or so undergraduates, mentored by Georgia Tech PhD students, hosted by Georgia Tech faculty.

If you are an undergraduate researcher in an ROTC/cadet program, contact Julie Ridings or Prof Durgin for application info.

How to Design Horn Antennas

Design of Horn and Open Waveguide Antennas at 915 MHz

Document ID: PG-TR-040813-YL
Date: August 13, 2004
Yenpao (Albert) Lu

Classic technical report by Albert Lu on the design of a horn antenna at 915 MHz.  We still use this horn antenna in show-and-tell in the Georgia Tech antenna class.  The report is a great primer on antenna design and measurement that I readily pass along to students who design or use  pyramidal horn antennas.

On-Wall, Wide Bandwidth E-shaped Patch Antenna for Improved Whole-Home Radio Tomography

Cheng Qi, Peter Hillyard, Amal Al-Husseiny, Neal Patwari, Gregory D. Durgin
IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification

This recent journal article documents a multi-year collaborative effort with the University of Utah to perform topography on buildings by slapping sensor networks around the building perimeter.  Measurement campaigns around Atlanta-area homes show how a custom-designed E-patch antenna can operate when placed against a variety of building materials.  Using this antenna, the RF tomography accuracy improves significantly, identifying moving people within the building with 1-2 meters.  The goal is to track emergency workers with a quick-to-deploy, ad-hoc wireless sensor network.
