RFID Anti-Collision System Using the Spread Spectrum Technique

Anil Rohatgi, PG-TR-050426-AR, 26 April 2005

This is a classic undergraduate research study involving the use of spread spectrum signaling in backscatter links.  Aside the novelty and quality of Rohatgi’s work, this was the work that Dan Deavours spotted a few year later.  He then invited our group to give a talk on the subject at IEEE RFID 2008 in Las Vegas  — a move that led to a fruitful, decade-long partnership that continues today.

Panel Discussion on the Future of RFID

Posted on May 21, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin Leave a Comment

Below is a video recording of the IEEE RFID 2018 panel session, “The Past, Present, and Future of RFID”.  Prof. Sanjay Sarma moderates as Prof. Matt Reynolds, Dr. Paul Muller, and Prof. Greg Durgin provide commentary.  Interesting questions include:

  • What are some of the interesting future applications ?
  • What are the biggest disappointments with RFID?
  • What would you like to see in a “Gen 3” RFID tag?

Very Creative Multi-Antenna RFID, Anime Style

This concept comes from a 2015 RFID-TA paper Daniel Dobkin and a bunch of friends at Cal Poly.  How do you explain a sophisticated, multi-antenna signaling scheme to a broad audience at the Big Site venue in Tokyo, Japan?  You use anime, of course!  Dr. Dobkin is always an entertaining presence at a conference.

Short Pulses on Transmission Lines

Posted on May 16, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin Leave a Comment

Below is a video on short pulses on transmission lines, which is one of the early ECE 3025 lectures at Georgia Tech. Short pulses behave a lot like DC pulses on transmission lines — they reflect! The effects look somewhat different, as ringing becomes inter-symbol interference. I found that students liked the link between the pulses on a transmission line and the concept of an impulse response of a channel.
