WaveRacers Competition in Antenna Engineering

Posted on November 19, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

Here is a summary of the 2018 design project for ECE 4370/1: Antenna Engineering (and Lab).  Students must design microwave energy-harvesting vehicles and antennas capable of self-propelling down a long track.  Costs for the project are provided by the space solar power institute.

Overview

The goal of this project is to make a high-gain, lightweight antenna that allows for microwave (5.8 GHz) energy harvesting and conversion to mechanical energy.  The antenna should have a targeted band of operation of the unlicensed ISM band from 5.725 GHz to 5.850 GHz. Your team should maximize peak gain and minimize weight for this application.

2007: The Beginning of MIMO Backscatter

Posted on November 16, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

2007:  Josh Griffin lead authors the immensely influential paper on the use of multiple antennas in a backscatter link for readers and tags. His work predicts big gains in both data rate and reliability.

Josh Griffin develops the theory of multi-antenna backscatter which forms the backbone of his PhD work.  Highly original and highly cited, the work has led to a number of subsequent investigations into the potential for multi-antenna backscatter systems. [Read more…]

Undergrad Rankings and Such

Posted on November 12, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

For those that care about these things, ECE scored its all-time highest under-graduate program rankings (#4 for EE, #5 for CompE).  Congratulations to the hard-working faculty and staff.  For those who are a little more cynical about general university rankings (as opposed to this specific accolade earned by the school of ECE), here is a fun article.
