A Multi-modulation Retrodirective Feed Network for Backscatter Communications

Mohammad Alhassoun, Francesco Amato, Gregory D. Durgin
2017 IEEE 28th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)

This paper presents a new device for implementing a retrodirective backscatter modulator — an antenna + RF structure that reflects microwaves back to their source, while also adding information.  The technique is extremely flexible and low-power, although only practical at microwave bands when the wavelength becomes several centimeters or shorter.

RFID Backscattering in Long-Range Scenarios

Francesco Amato, Hakki Mert Torun, Gregory D. Durgin. IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications.

This paper contains the designs for Francesco Amato’s tunnel diode modulator and some of the record-beating range measurements that resulted from his PhD work (5.8 GHz backscatter at up to 1.2 km).  Of particular interest is the characterization of the irregular link-budget that results from these highly nonlinear devices.

Antennas for Intraoral Tongue Drive System at 2.4 GHz: Design, Characterization, and Comparison

Fanpeng Kong; Cheng Qi; Hoseon Lee; Gregory D. Durgin; Maysam Ghovanloo
IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2018

This collaboration with the Ghovanloo group studies small antennas placed within the mouth.  These antennas connect to sensors and allow short-range communication with radios outside the body.  These sensors retrieve information such as tongue position, which can be used to pilot a motorized wheelchair.  Congratulations, Fanpeng and company!

Analysis of error in time difference of arrival measurements introduced by the motion of satellite-based receivers

Stephen M. Dumas; T. Alan Lovell; Andrew J. Sinclair; Gregory D. Durgin
2017 IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments (WiSEE)

This article analyzes the ranging errors in a new type of satellite ranging configuration:  a system where a moving constellation of small satellites (e.g. cubesats) track other moving space-based targets.  This work was sponsored by AFRL and performed in conjunction with Kirtland Air Force Base.
