Milestone in the Brave New World of Engineering Education

Posted on February 28, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

I have taught nearly 1500 students since I started at Georgia Tech in 2003.  In that time, I have delivered (generously) about 7 solid years of “watch time” to engineering students physically in the classroom.  In the 5 year existence of my YouTube channel of electromagnetics lectures, the lectures have generated nearly 8 years of total watch time.  These are just low-quality recordings of niche topics with virtually zero production value.

As one of my colleagues said, “If you don’t flip your classroom, the students will do it for you.”  This all underscores a huge demand for low-cost technical lectures on the internet.  For my money, the best electromagnetic video collections are the “bite-sized” topical lectures of Prof. Cynthia Furse at University of Utah.

The Big Schodowski

Posted on February 7, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

Today, Jake Schodowski started his job at Atlanta Micro, an up-and-coming local company that specialized in RF devices and designs (up to 40 GHz). Jake performed some excellent work with NASA and nGimat on a space-based Ka-band array design.  It should be noted that nGimat (pronounced N-Gee-Mat, short for engineered nano-materials) was a GT-based startup in the 1990s based on applied nano-materials.

The GTPG is continuing work with mm-wave arrays, although this is becoming an increasingly difficult area to staff due to the short “shelf-life” of RF engineers with mm-wave experience.  Industry cannot get enough of these types of students at the moment.

Problem of the Day Archive

Posted on February 2, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

For those that miss problems-of-the-day, the website menu contains an archival link to a collection of these postings.  The casual website reader probably wants nothing to do with PotDs, but for the select few who cannot get enough of applied problems in electromagnetism … enjoy!

2017 in a Word Cloud

Posted on January 29, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

Do you want a snapshot of the group’s activities last year?  Here is a word cloud with all of the group’s 2017 publications incorporated to give the scope of the work for the past year.  Not surprisingly, our researchers like RFID, antennas, and the IEEE.  It starts to get diverse after that, branching out into power, coding, encryption, and localization.
