Remembering Prof. Tom Michaels

Posted on June 4, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

We remember the life of Prof. Tom Michaels, who passed away last week in Spokane, WA, surrounded by family.  Tom was a beloved emag teacher and renowned researcher in the field of non-destructive testing.  He was a very popular emag teacher in the school and coordinated many classes of senior design students.  Despite physical ailments, he was always upbeat, a classy role model for young engineers. Below is a video of Prof. Michaels substituting for me in ECE 3025.  He will be greatly missed.

Congratulations to Robert Corless, who successfully completed his Masters thesis and graduated this May from ECE. Robert has been working with the GTPG for the last two years, studying frequency-hopping in backscatter radio systems at microwave frequency. He will continue his career as a telecommunications engineering with the US Army. Our best to you and your family, Robert!

Below is a video recording of the IEEE RFID 2018 panel session, “The Past, Present, and Future of RFID”.  Prof. Sanjay Sarma moderates as Prof. Matt Reynolds, Dr. Paul Muller, and Prof. Greg Durgin provide commentary.  Interesting questions include:

  • What are some of the interesting future applications ?
  • What are the biggest disappointments with RFID?
  • What would you like to see in a “Gen 3” RFID tag?

The video below is an excerpt from the IEEE RFID 2018’s 20th Anniversary of AutoID Labs Special keynote session. Prof. Sanjay Sarma gives his thoughts on the nature of the “Internet of Things” and the future of RFID.  My favorite part is the statistic about Uber at 9:25 (discussion begins at 7:20).
