The Radio Assay for Antennas

Posted on October 31, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

The Radio Assay:
Josh Griffin kicked off the microwave backscatter research with his famous “Radio Assay” — custom hardware that could measure link degradations experience by RFID tag antennas when placed upon card- board, wood, metal, etc.  In 2004, Josh Griffin began the first of many UHF/microwave backscatter experiments involving the “Radio Assay” of an antenna.  The radio assay was a series of tests involving antennas radiating against different types of materials:  cardboard, wood, water containers, plastic, meat, and metal.

WWB12: Multi-Antenna Signaling

Posted on October 29, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

This lecture presents the concept of multi-antenna backscatter signaling with multiple reader and tag antennas.  The key paper for review is Josh Griffin’s ground-breaking work on MIMO signaling with backscatter tags.  We also discuss the interesting small-scale fading behaviors that can arise in these scenarios.

15 Years of Microwave Backscatter Research at the GTPG

Posted on October 24, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

This year marks the 15th of the GTPG’s microwave backscatter research program.  In subsequent posts, we will likely highlight some of this work over the years to give an appreciation to how far we’ve come (and how hard the students have worked).  But for now, enjoy the following graphical timeline of the many highlights:

WWB11: Modulated Backscatter

Posted on October 22, 2018 Written by Gregory Durgin

Introductory lesson on the use of load modulation to transfer information from an antenna to a reader.  The lecture describes how to construct a link budget given all of the realistic effects encountered in the terrestrial backscatter world.
